BRIGHTON, Mass. – In a matchup of the top-two teams in the NEWMAC, and two top 25 teams, the No. 24 MIT softball team dropped both ends of the doubleheader to No. 18 WPI on Saturday afternoon at the Harrington Athletics Village.
Prior to the game, MIT acknowledged its senior class of Ava Ladd and Olivia Scarpaci.

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME ONE:
- WPI jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first. Sandy Fairbairn and Riley O'Brien had RBI singles while Ali Chalovich hit a two-run homer to center.
- Holland Poe hit a two-out single in the second, and Layla Thiessen hit a two-out single in the third, but both were left stranded.
- A six-run fourth increased the WPI lead to 10-0.
- Ava Ladd led off the fourth with a single and scored on a two-out triple from Poe. An error on a ball hit by Kaaya Mehta scored Poe and Mehta then scored on a double from Olivia Scarpaci to make it a 10-3 game.
- Lucy Latour hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth to put WPI up 11-3, but MIT responded in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single from Arianna Kumar to make it a 7-run game.
- Back-to-back homers to left from Fairbairn and Emma Nagy to open the sixth made it a 13-4 game and after a strikeout of O'Brien, Ali Chalovich hit her second homer of the game to make it a 14-4 contest.
- With one out in the sixth, MIT got three-straight singles from Maggie Feng, Thiessen, and Delaney Benevides, however, WPI got the the final two outs to take game one, 14-4.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Thiessen and Poe led the way with three hits each for MIT.
- Fairbairn finished with three hits and five RBI while Chalovich went 3-3 with three RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME TWO:
- O'Brien got WPI on the board in the first with an RBI single, but MIT took the lead in the second as Poe hit another triple to score Sundquist and a Mehta single plated Poe to give MIT the lead.
- Another big inning for WPI put them back in front by a 6-2 score. Nagy hit a homer and Latour had an RBI single with the big hit coming off the bat of Virginia McKinney whose double cleared the bases. WPI tacked on another run in the fourth to go up 7-2.
- Three-straight singles to open the fourth got MIT its third run of the day as Mehta's hit plated Sundquist. Feng hit a sacrifice fly, and Ladd had an RBI single to make it a three-run game.
- WPI scored twice in the fifth, but the home team responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning on RBIs from Mehta and Scarpaci to make the score 9-7.
- A double from Fairbairn in the seventh gave the visitors an insurance run heading into the last inning. Sundquist got to third for MIT in the bottom of the inning, but WPI got out of the inning to take the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Poe led MIT with three hits and three runs scored.
- Ladd, Kumar, Sundquist, Mehta, and Scarpaci all had two hits.
- Latour went 4-5 from the lead-off spot and scored four runs for WPI.
