No. 25 Softball Defeated by No. 12 WPI in NEWMAC Championship

WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 25 MIT softball team dropped a 10-3 decision to top-seed and No. 12 WPI in the winner-takes-all game of the 2026 NEWMAC Tournament Championship. 

THE BASICS:  

  • Score: No. 12 WPI 10, MIT 3 
  • Records: No. 25 MIT (33-9 Overall), No. 12 WPI (42-3 Overall) 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • WPI got a run off a fielder's choice with one out but MIT was able to escape the inning as Sharona Huang got two groundouts to hold the hosts to one run.  
  • Lauren Sundquist singled to lead off the first and Julia Mattiace walked to put two on. Maggie Feng put them in scoring position with a sacrifice bunt but MIT could not push a run across. 
  • The host tacked on another run in the second off a Meg Sherwood single, but MIT got out of the inning, leaving two WPI runners stranded.  
  • Mattiace hit a two-out single in the fourth and Feng followed with a single to push the first run of the day across for MIT. Olivia Scarpaci then took the first pitch from Naomi Boldebuck over the leftfield wall to give MIT a 3-2 lead.  
  • Four doubles in the fifth helped the home team score five runs and take a 7-3 lead. They added three more in the sixth to go up 10-3. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Scarpaci hit her second homer of the season and 12th of her career. 
  • The MIT pitchers, Sharona Huang and Emily Watson allowed just one walk in the game.

  • MIT will find out its NCAA selection tomorrow, Monday, May 11 at 11:00 AM when the locations and matchups are announced on NCAA.com.
