No. 25 Softball Upsets No. 12 WPI, 8-5 to Advance to NEWMAC Tournament Championship Round

WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 25 nationally ranked and second seed in the NEWMAC Tournament MIT softball team used a three run sixth inning and held off a late rally from top seed and No. 12 nationally ranked WPI to advance to tomorrow's championship game as MIT earned an 8-5 win on Friday afternoon on Rooftop Field.  

THE BASICS:  

  • Score: MIT 8, WPI 5 
  • Records: No. 25 MIT (33-7 Overall), No. 12 WPI (39-3 Overall) 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Olivia Scarpaci singled to center with one out in the second and Julia Mattiace followed with a double to right to put two runners in scoring position. Maggie Feng flied out to center to plate Scarpaci and Delaney Benevides followed with a single to left to give MIT a 2-0 advantage.  
  • MIT got the first three batters on in the fourth to load the bases. An RBI groundout from Layla Thiessen plated Mattiace to make it 3-0 and Ava Ladd doubled to center to increase the MIT lead to 5-0. 
  • Sandy Fairbairn tripled to right center to leadoff the fourth and scored on a groundout by Riley O'Brien but MIT got the final out of the inning. 
  • Stella Kozak singled to leadoff the fifth but was thrown out by Scarpaci trying to steal second. A walk to Meg Sherwood followed by a Lucy Latour double to right center got WPI to within three, but yet again MIT got out of the inning. 
  • Emma Nagy scored on an O'Brien sacrifice fly and Ali Chalovich homered to cut the lead to four in the sixth. WPI got a walk and a single with two outs, but Sarah Blackett got Latour looking to end the frame. 
  • Nagy hit a homer with two outs in the seventh to pull WPI to three, but O'Brien flied out to Thiessen in left to end the game. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Benevides collected a career-high four hits while scoring two runs to go with her RBI. Thiessen finished 3-4 while Sundquist had two hits. 
  • Latour led WPI with two hits. 
  • Sharona Huang tossed the first 4.2 innings to improve to 15-3. She allowed just two runs on four hits. Blackett got the save as she finished the game allowing two earned runs on three hits with one walk and one strikeout.  
  • Naomi Boldebuck falls to 14-3 as she threw 3.1 innings allowing five runs on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout.  

UP NEXT:  

  • MIT will play the winner of Coast Guard and WPI tomorrow, Saturday, May 9 at WPI at 12:00 PM in the NEWMAC Championship.
