PROVIDENCE, RI – The MIT water polo team dropped a tight 15-13 match to Division III No. 3 Johns Hopkins in double overtime but came back to earn an 18-3 win over Wheaton at the Bruno Classic hosted by Brown University.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. JOHNS HOPKINS:
- After a quick goal from Hopkins just 30 seconds into the game, MIT scored the next five, paced by a first quarter hattrick from Caspar Lightner.
- JHU scored the opening two goals of the second to pull within two, but Lightner scored his fourth of the game to double up the Jays. Hopkins ended the quarter on a 3-0 run to send the teams into half tied at six.
- Rick Lundh gave MIT the lead with a goal at 6:31, but Hopkins quickly responded to pull even. After Alec Baker tied the match at eight, MIT scored the final two goals to take a 10-8 lead into the final quarter.
- The Jays pulled even, but Lightner scored his fifth of the day on a five-meter to put MIT back in front with 4:40 remaining. Hopkins then scored the next two goals to take a 12-11 lead with 2:09 left, but Luca Morocco scored with nine seconds left to send the teams into overtime.
- After Luke Mendelsohn scored 68 seconds into the first overtime, Jake Schweizer scored just 30 seconds later to tie the match at 13. Owen Bartlett then scored two goals to give the Jays the lead heading into the second overtime. MIT had three shots in the period, but all were turned away by Hopkins goaltender Sebastian Isaacs.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Armaan Gill made 14 saves in goal for the Engineers.
- Lightner finished the match with six goals. Morocco, Schweizer, and Lundh all finished with two.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. WHEATON:
- MIT raced out to a quick 6-0 lead after one paced by two goals from Morocco and Andras Beleznay.
- The Engineers continued to build on their lead, opening the second on a 4-0 run before Wheaton was able to break through with its first score of the game. Kieran Kerans scored with 3:06 on the clock to send MIT into the break with an 11-1 lead.
- Victor Perez scored a five meter goal to extend the Engineer advantage to 13-2 and MIT went on to score three more goals to end the third with a 16-3 lead.
- Derek Schaffer and David Ranaudo scored the lone goals of the fourth to account for the 18-3 score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- MIT had 13 different goal scorers in the game led by Beleznay with four goals.
- Morocco and Armeet Gill each had two goals.

- MIT concludes the Bruno Invitational tomorrow, Sunday, September 27 with an 8:45 AM match against Concordia University Irvine followed by an 11:30 AM match against Connecticut College.
