Evan Thews-Wassell is in his 18th year as MIT’s men’s heavyweight assistant coach and recruiting coordinator in 2023-24. During his tenure, the program has become nationally competitive and has grown into a perennial power at the National Invitational Rowing Championship.

Thews-Wassell came to the Institute after serving as the novice coach at Northampton Youth and Community Rowing, Inc. He led the NYCRI novice boy’s squad to a first-place finish in the Massachusetts Public State Fall Championships and a second-place finish in the Massachusetts Public State Spring Championships, registering the best finish in program history.

Outside of MIT, Thews-Wassell has helped coach the Union Boat Club and Cambridge Boat Club junior summer programs to multiple medals at the USRowing Club National Championships and Canadian Henley Regatta.

Thews-Wassell began his coxing career at Northampton High School before moving on to Ithaca College, where he earned an ECAC Silver medal and led the Varsity 8+ for three years. Following graduation, he coxed for the lightweight high performance group at Riverside Boat Club.

Thews-Wassell graduated from Ithaca College in 2005, majoring in Theatre Arts Management.
