Off the Court at MIT: Majoring in materials science and engineering...conducted research in oral nanoparticle immonuotherapy at the Irvine Lab...studied polymer thin films for continuous manufacturing of pharmaceutical tablets in the Trout Lab.
Why I Chose MIT: Knowing that my mother went to MIT, it was actually not where I had envisioned myself going when I was younger. Fate would have it, however, that somehow my interests developed into making MIT the perfect fit for me (medium size, strong engineering and science programs, a solid DIII volleyball team, a great alumni network, good financial aid, etc.). The summer before my junior year of high school Coach Dill instructed my court at my mother's volleyball camp. I thought he was fun and awesome (I still think he is fun and awesome). I had not intended to apply to colleges based on volleyball programs before meeting Coach Dill. One of the biggest draws for me was the people. I noticed so many vastly different personalities as I walked down the hallways of my tour; so different, yet so much the same highly motivated and capable person as the one behind him. After visiting multiple times I began to develop a sense for the personality and energy of the school's student body, and I felt excited just to sit there watch. So, I knew I was definitely applying to MIT, and if I got in, I knew I was going.
High School: A 2008 graduate of Chelmsford High School...two-time Lowell Sun player of the year...Lowell Sun all-star...MIAA Sportsmanship Award...two-time Boston Globe and Boston Herald all-scholastic team...three-time team MVP...Chelmsford High School Scholar Athlete...National Hispanic Scholar...Holy Cross Book Award.
Club: Beantown Volleyball Club (four years), Latitude Volleyball Club (one year).
Personal: Son of Karyn Altman...mother played volleyball at MIT and went on to coach both the men's and women's varsity volleyball teams at MIT.
