Following a hiatus from intercollegiate coaching, Mike Kalin returned to the MIT sailing program in 2014. He was previously a coach with the Engineers from 2000-06, helping the coed team to a consistent ranking among the top 15 in the nation, with the squad placing as high as 11th at Nationals.

The 2023 season saw the women's team capture the New England Fleet Race Championships and earn a 4th-place finish at the Women's Team Race National Championship. In addition the co-ed team grabbed an 11th-place finish at Nationals and a 12th-place finish at the Open New England Fleet Race Championships. Additionally, he helped coach three All-Americans in Dana Haig, Maaya Prasad and Sam Bruce.

In 2022, the MIT women's team finished 8th at the NEISA Team Race Championships and 7th at the Team Race National Championships. The team then earned a 9th-place finish at the National Championships. Kalin also helped lead the coed team to an 11th-place finish at the NEISA Team Race Championships and the team qualified for the ICSA Dinghy National Championships.

In 2016, Kalin aided the women's team to an eighth place finish at the ICSA Women's National Championship and in 2017 he brought the coed team to nationals as they took home eighth place at the ICSA Team Race National Championship. Then in 2018, Kalin guided the women's team to a fifth place finish at the National Championship and the coed team to their first ICSA National Championship title since 1961. In 2019, his women's team finished 12th at nationals after claiming their first-ever NEISA Championship in the spring. Over the past three years, Kalin has coached ten All-Americans selected by the ICSA.

Kalin left MIT to compete full-time for the Canadian Sailing Team where he was the fourth-ranked member of the team in the Olympic Laser class, winning the Marvin McDill Award in 2006 for the top rookie performance at an Olympic class world championship. Since sailing for the Canadian team he served as the sailing director at the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco from 2008-11 as well as working as a coach for the U.S. Olympic Sailing Team and as a member of the 2013 America’s Cup Race Management Group.
