Brooke Kalman enters her fifth season as the head coach of the MIT softball program in 2022-23. In addition to her softball duties, Kalman works with student-athlete programming for DAPER.Â
After not playing in the 2020 or 2021 seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Kalman led the team back to the NCAA Tournament as the Engineers finished with a 32-18 record. Kalman coached a program-record six NFCA All-Region honorees and a Second Team All-America honoree in Katia Pendowski. The Engineers also had the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year (Mackenzie Bivin) and three NEWMAC All-Conference honorees. For the season MIT set new program records in many categories including team batting average, RBI and doubles. In addition, the Engineers posted the seventh-highest GPA in Division III during the season with 13 student-athletes being named Scholar All-Americans while Anya Chase and Pendowski were named First Team CoSIDA Academic All-Americans.Â
In her first season with the Engineers, Kalman guided the Engineers to a 30-12-1 overall record. MIT entered the NEWMAC playoffs as the second seed after going 15-2-1 in league play and reached the final game of the tournament before being selected to host an NCAA regional for the second straight season. The Engineers won three games in the regional round and reached the final game of the four team pod for the third time in program history. Kalman coached three NFCA All-Region honorees, one CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-American and four NEWMAC All-Conference student-athletes including the league's Pitcher of the Year.
Kalman came to MIT from Franklin & Marshall, where she guided the Diplomats to a 17-21 overall record in 2018 that included an 8-8 mark in Centennial Conference play. She had four players earn All-Conference honors, including a pair of First Team selections, as her team ended the season ranked 12th nationally in fielding percentage with a mark of .971.
Her other head coaching experience includes a stint at Ripon College in Wisconsin, where she led the Red Hawks to the program’s highest win total in the last five years. She was also an assistant coach at Ursinus College in 2015 and 2016, where she was responsible for scheduling, practice planning, recruiting and fundraising.
A 2014 graduate of Gettysburg, she was a two-time captain and a four-year letter winner while earning Second Team All-Conference honors as a senior. She was a member of the 2014 All-Centennial Conference Sportsmanship Team who was also an Academic All-Conference honoree in 2013. Kalman ranks fourth in Gettysburg history for runners caught stealing, as well as 12th in career fielding percentage at .977.
Kalman earned her Bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in writing from Gettysburg in 2014, along with her Master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling from Villanova in 2016. At Villanova, she earned the Beverly B. Kahn Memorial Scholarship that was presented to the person who demonstrates a passion for assisting with the growth of underprivileged students.
