Benjamin McElhiney joined the Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation in 2004 as the Assistant Director of Aquatics and is in his 20th year at MIT in 2023-24. Since 2012, Ben has served the department as the Director of Aquatics. In this position he oversees the aquatic operations for one of the premier aquatic facilities in the Northeast.

McElhiney is a graduate of Salem State University, with a bachelor’s in sport and movement science. He received his Master’s degree from Anna Maria College in the field of emergency management in 2014.

McElhiney has presented at several local and national, National Recreation and Park Association and National Intramural Recreation Sports Association conferences. In his free time, he volunteers for many local organizations including, the Boston Marathon as a medical first responder. He has a strong history in the aquatic field and has been in and out of the water for the past 20 years.
