Dave Hagymas, a six-time NEWMAC Coach of the Year, enters his 21st season at the helm of the MIT men’s varsity tennis program in 2025-26.

In his time with the Engineers, Hagymas has directed the team to a NEWMAC Championship and trips to the NCAA Tournament 17 times. During his tenure at MIT, he has compiled an overall record of 271-102 in dual matches, including an 92-3 mark in conference play. MIT is now 139-4 all-time in NEWMAC regular season contests and 49-1 in conference postseason games. In total, Hagymas has seen five of his student-athletes qualify for the NCAA singles or doubles championship tournaments and five of them earn NCAA All-America honors. Additionally, seven of his teams have reached the regional championship match in the NCAA Tournament (2010, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2023, 2024).

Kailas Kahler qualified for the NCAA Singles Tournament in 2025 where he earned All-America honors by advancing to the second round.

In 2024, Hagymas coached Kailas Kahler to All-America in singles play as Kahler became the program's first student-athlete to be named the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America Team Member of the Year. As a team, MIT went 20-4 and 7-0 in NEWMAC play to capture both the regular season and tournament championship. The Engineer went on to advance to the NCAA Regional Championship after upsetting No. 10 Trinity (TX).

In 2017, Hagymas led the Engineers to one of their best season’s in program history. A year that included the team’s 19th straight NEWMAC Championship, the Cardinal and Gray posted 18 wins and had a student-athlete qualify for the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Singles Championship Tournament for the first time since 2012-13. MIT advanced through to the regional championship match of the NCAA Division III Tournament for the second time in as many years and for the fourth time since 2009-10 after defeating No. 40 Stevens Institute of Technology, 5-1, in the second round.

Prior to his arrival at MIT, Hagymas was an assistant coach at Duke University from 1992-04. In his first season with the Blue Devils, he worked with the women’s team before beginning an 11-year stint with the men’s squad. During his tenure with the men’s team, he helped guide the Blue Devils to a top-10 national ranking each season and nine Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) championship titles. In 1997, Hagymas was named the Regional Assistant Coach of the Year and then earned national accolades in 2001.

Hagymas graduated from Coastal Carolina University, formerly University of South Carolina at Coastal, in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education. He earned Big South All-Conference honors while playing for the Chanticleers.
