Matt Hanig

Matt Hanig was promoted to assistant women’s openweight crew coach in the fall of 2025.

Hanig originally joined MIT as interim women’s openweight rowing assistant coach in January 2025 and made an immediate impact on the program, helping the Engineers V4A win gold at the New England Rowing Championship and place fourth at the Patriot League (PL) Championships. In addition, Hanig coached the 2V4 that won the Knecht Cup and placed third at the PL Championships as well as both the Engineers 4- and 8+ in preparation for and at the 2025 Henley Royal Regatta.

Hanig has an extensive coaching background, spanning across nearly two decades. He was promoted to women’s rowing associate head coach at Boston University in 2023, after serving as the women’s rowing assistant coach for a decade. Hanig managed and coordinated all aspects of the Division I rowing program at BU, including having responsibilities in recruiting, budget management, revenue generation, scholarship allocation and in building relationships with a wide range of constituency groups. He saw competitive success with the Terriers, including three league championships and staff of the year accolades, three NCAA Championship bids, and eight league championship crews. Off the water, BU’s team also set a program record for GPAs. Hanig also served as the Women’s Rowing Recruiting Coordinator and Recreational Rowing Coordinator during his time at BU.

Hanig has additional coaching experience with the Wayland-Weston Rowing Association, where he produced three top ten finishes at Head Of The Charles in four years, seven team state championships, and five V8 state championships, and as the Assistant Coach of Men’s Rowing at Colgate University from 2006-08, where he recruited and developed both walk-on and experienced freshman resulting in grand final and medal caliber performances at the Dad Vail and IRA regattas.

A USRowing Level II Certified Coach, Hanig earned his B.S. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and M. Ed. from BU, and is currently working on a MBA through BU. He currently resides in Framingham, Mass. with my wife Cara, son Jonah, and their dog Hobbes.
