AT MIT

Stephanie Smith is in her ninth year as the Director of Recreation and her 21st year overall at MIT in 2026-27.

Smith was promoted to Director of Recreation on December 7, 2018.

Prior to her promotion, Smith most recently served as the Associate Director of Recreation, Programs and Fitness, where she collaborated with MIT departments for campus-wide health promotion programs and marketing initiatives, supervised fitness and wellness programs and oversaw maintenance of the fitness facilities and equipment. When she arrived at MIT in 2006, Smith worked as the Assistant Fitness Director as she taught dance and fitness classes while supervising over 70 fitness and wellness classes per week.

BEFORE MIT

Previously, Smith worked for two years as a Fitness Intern at the Dublin Community Recreation Center in Dublin, Ohio and for three years as a personal trainer and aerobics instructor at The Ohio State University.

OTHER EXPERIENCES

Smith is active in NIRSA, Leaders in Campus Recreation, and has presented at numerous state and regional level conferences. She co-hosted the Region 1 conference in Boston in 2014 and serves on a variety of national and regional committees.

EDUCATION

Smith graduated from The Ohio State University in 2006 with a degree in Allied Health and Health and Wellness. She received her Masters of Sports Leadership from Northeastern University in January of 2012.
