MILTON, Mass. - Mitchell Kates scored a
career-high 28 points while falling just short of a triple-double
as MIT team picked up a 66-56 win over Curry College in
non-conference men's basketball action Tuesday night. Kates added
nine rebounds and eight steals, tying Bradley Gampel's single-game
program record, to help the Engineers improve to 4-0 on the season.
Kates scored eight of his team's first 14 points over the first
4:20 as Tech raced out to an early 10 point lead. However, a
three-point play by Jamal Jackson capped a 12-2 run by the Colonels
to tie the game with just under 11 minutes remaining in the first
half. The teams battled evenly for the rest of the opening stanza
until Kates found Jimmy Burke for a three-ball with 49 seconds left
to send the Cardinal and Grey into the break leading 29-26.
Kates had nine more points during a key, 14-4 run that saw MIT's
advantage swell to 15 with 9:05 to go. Curry would not get closer
than seven the rest of the way as the Engineers held on for their
third-straight win.
Noel Hollingsworth added a double-double with 12 points and 10
boards while Burke also chipped in with 12. Tech forced the
Colonels into 23 turnovers, converting those into 20 points.
MIT welcomes Suffolk University in its home opener on Saturday,
November 28. Tip-off is at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at Rockwell Cage.
