BOSTON, Mass. - MIT used a significant height
advantage to take a 47-23 rebounding edge and defeat Emerson
College, 66-51, in a non-conference men's basketball match-up at
Emerson's Brown & Plofker Gym. The Engineers (6-0) are now one
win shy of matching the best start in program history, set in 2001.
Will Tashman at 6'8"and Noel Hollingswoth at 6'9" each grabbed
13 caroms to outrebound the entire Emerson team. The Engineers held
the usually hot shooting Lions to a .347 field goal percentage
while shooting 45% from the field themselves.
MIT raced out to a 33-17 halftime lead, outscoring Emerson,
26-8, in the paint and holding a 12-2 advantage in second chance
points. A 15-5 Emerson run to begin the second half brought the
Lions to within 38-32 with 16:03 left, but a Billy Bender layup
slowed the run and although Emerosn's Kabir Moss canned two free
throws to keep the margin at six, Emerson could not come any closer
for the remainder of the contest.
Bender led the Engineers in double figures with 15 points.
Tashman and Hollingsworth each had 12 points to give them
double-doubles for the game. Nathan Firn led Emerson with 15
points, while Bryan Rouse had a dozen.
