Engineers Cruise Past Emerson, 17-6

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – For the second game in a row MIT freshman Michael Traub (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) generated nine points, this time on seven goals and two assists, as the Engineers defeated Emerson College, 17-6, on Wednesday. With the win, the men's lacrosse team improved to 7-6 on the year and 2-1 in NEWMAC play.

Sophomore Luke Verdi (Middletown, Md.) and freshman Harris Stolzenberg (Weston, Fla.) both posted three goals and two assists while fellow rookie Keith Galli (Henniker, N.H.) recorded a hat-trick for MIT. Sophomore Paul Orrson (Baltimore, Md.) produced one goal and two assists as freshman Henry Aspegren (Ann Arbor, Mich.) along with sophomores Jonah Hessels (Laytonsville, Md.) and Joseph Sullivan (Atlanta, Ga.) each earned an assist. Freshman Matthew Kalinowski (Toms River, N.J.) tallied four caused turnovers and three groundballs while sophomore Chris McPherson (Gaithersburg, Md.) generated two caused turnovers. Senior Britt Cyr (Cincinnati, Ohio) dished out two assists and won nine of his 10 faceoff attempts as freshman Cody Jacobucci (Woodstown, N.J.) went 7-of-8 in faceoffs. Sophomore Max Malinowski (Boise, Idaho) was 6-of-8 on the faceoff "x" while classmate Eric Bartell (San Diego, Calif.) collected five saves.

Traub opened the scoring by converting a feed from Cyr after 4:45 elapsed. MIT controlled the action but did not increase its lead until a solo effort by Galli with 2:51 on the clock. The Engineers won the ensuing faceoff which resulted in Traub finding Verdi for the score.

Emerson ended the shutout at the 11:03 mark of the second quarter but a blast by Traub upped the margin to 4-1. A defensive battle ensued before Verdi scored with 3:21 and then two seconds on the clock to give the visitors a comfortable cushion at the intermission.

MIT carried the momentum into the third stanza as Stolzenberg set up Galli after nine seconds expired while a strike by Orrson made the score 8-1 at the 13:38 mark. The Lions ended their scoring drought over a minute later but the Engineers responded with a goal from Traub. Emerson continued the exchange of goals; however, back-to-back markers by Traub extended the lead to 11-3 midway through the quarter. The Lions registered the next two goals but this was as close as it would get as Stolzenberg redirected a feed from Cyr with 1:45 remaining.

MIT closed out the game by outscoring Emerson, 5-1, in the final frame. Traub connected on a pass from Orrson almost two minutes in while Stolzenberg followed with two goals, the last being assisted by Orrson. Traub found the back of the net with 7:54 on the clock and then found Galli for the final tally of the night three minutes later. Emerson recorded its lone goal of the quarter with 3:11 left to play.

The Engineers continue their NEWMAC road trip on Saturday, April 19 with a visit to Wheaton College.
