Women's Swimming and Diving

No. 6 MIT Women's Swimming and Diving Falls to No. 8 Williams College, 167-130

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Competing in their first home dual meet since November, the sixth-ranked MIT women's swimming and diving team fell to eighth-ranked Williams College, 167-130, on Friday evening in the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center Pool. With the loss, MIT drops to 5-1 in dual meets this season, while Williams improves to 7-0.

Junior Margaret Guo (San Diego, Calif.), sophomore Veronika Jedryka (Arlington Heights, Ill.), and freshmen Jessica Chen (Rockville, Md.) and Amanda Wu (Cedar Park, Texas) commenced the meet with a second place finish the 200 Yard Medley Relay, clocking a time of 1:47.26. The quartet placed roughly a second behind Williams' unit, which finished the event in 1:46.86.

Jedryka captured the 100 Yard Backstroke, touching the wall in 57.91, while assisting Tech's 200 Yard Freestyle Relay unit – made up of senior Emmie Ryan (Avon, Ind.), junior Lena Yang (East Stroudsburg, Pa.) and Wu – to a first place finish (1:35.59). Ryan won the 200 Yard Freestyle, clocking a time of 1:53.23 and came in second in the 100 Yard Freestyle (53.09), while Yang placed first in 52.74. Ryan also placed second in the 500 Yard Freestyle (5:07.54).

Freshman Mary Thielking (Fishers, Ind.) placed second in the 1650 Yard Freestyle, recording a time of 17:44.31. She finished a spot behind Ryan in the 500 Yard Freestyle, clocking a third place time of 5:09.49. In the 200 Yard Butterfly, junior Teresa de Figueiredo (College Station, Texas) placed third in 2:10.04.

In the 50 Yard Freestyle, Yang placed first, clocking an overall time of 24.07, while Guo finished third (24.92). Freshman Christina Tournant (Seminole, Fla.) came in third in the 1 meter dive (242.40) and 3 meter drive (239.47).

Chen came in first in the 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:06.35) and Wu finished third in 1:06.76. Freshman Joanna Han (Marlboro, N.J.) placed second in the 200 Yard Breaststroke, touching the wall in 2:24.19, while Chen finished third in 2:24.67.

MIT returns to the pool next Saturday, January 31 when they host Amherst College. The meet will feature two sessions, the first beginning at 11:00 a.m., while the second will commence at 5:00 p.m.
