WORCESTER, Mass. – MIT freshman Joanna Han (Marlboro, N.J.) highlighted sixth-ranked MIT's outing at the third day of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Swimming and Diving Championships by establishing a new program record in the 400-yard IM. The Cardinal and Gray, who entered the day atop the rankings, concluded the evening with an overall team score of 871 points. Springfield College, which was in second place last night, remains a spot behind Tech with 559 points.

Han placed second in the 400-yard IM, touching the wall in 4:28.71. Her time achieved a NCAA B cut and would have qualified her for the event in the 2014 NCAA Championship meet in 2014. Senior Emmie Ryan (Avon, Ind.) captured the 200-yard freestyle, clocking a time of 1:52.74. Her time was also a B cut.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, freshmen Amanda Wu (Cedar Park, Texas) and Jessica Chen (Rockville, Md.) finished second and third. Wu clocked a time of 1:05.33, while Chen touched the wall in 1:05.43. Both times were B cuts.

Sophomore Veronika Jedryka (Arlington Heights, Ill.) finished first in the 100-yard backstroke, recording a time of 56.32. Her time – a B cut – would have qualified her for the NCAA Championships last season.

In the 200-yard medley relay, Jedryka, Chen, Wu and junior Margaret Guo (San Diego, Calif.) collaborated for a first place performance, recording a time of 1:45.18. Their time would have qualified them for last year's national championship, but it also provided the quartet with a B cut and the fifth-best time in program history.

MIT will return to the pool tomorrow for the final day of the championship and will compete in the 200-back, 100-free, 200-breast, 200-fly, 400-free, 1,650-free and the one-meter dive. Prelims start at 10 a.m., while finals will begin at 6 p.m.
