Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT freshman Graham Davis (Crofton, Md.) halted a fourth quarter comeback, netting the game's final goal at 2:14, which lifted the Engineers to an 11-9 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology on Tuesday afternoon at Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium. With the win, the Cardinal and Gray improve to 4-0 - matching their program's best start from 1993 - while the Leopards dip 2-1 overall.
MIT entered the final stanza leading 8-6, but after junior Paul Orrson (Baltimore, Md.) recorded his final goal of the afternoon – his initial hat trick of the season – Wentworth netted three of the next four goals, including back-to-back man-up tallies. Senior Ryan Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) and sophomore Mike Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) each located the back of the net on consecutive man-up goals at 3:56 and 2:44, respectively, but that would be the closest the Leopards would get. Davis recorded the game-clinching goal roughly 30 seconds later at 2:14 when he buried a feed from junior Jonah Hessels (Laytonsville, Md.).
Wentworth seniors Michael Cushera (Waltham, Mass.) and Dillon Lynch (Southwick, Mass.) commenced the contest with back-to-back goals at 13:07 and 10:10 in the first quarter that provided the visitors with a 2-0 advantage. Tech countered with a 5-0 run, spanning the first and second quarter, which was initiated by senior Chris Cook (Tully, N.Y.) at 7:15 in the opening stanza.
Coakley, who finished with two goals and two assists, halted the spurt with his initial strike of the contest at 2:26 that brought the visitors within two goals at the break (5-3). Junior Nick Parent (Windham, N.H.) brought the Leopards within one goal at 10:48, but again, the Engineers countered with a pair of man-up goals from Orson and sophomore Harris Stolzenberg (Weston, Fla.) at 5:11 and 4:42, respectively, which pushed the Engineers ahead, 7-4.
Wentworth closed the third quarter with a pair of goals - an even strike by Cushera and a man-up marker by Lynch – before Orson located the back of the Leopards' cage following a pass from Stolzenberg, which made it 8-6.
MIT junior Eric Bartell (San Diego, Calif.) picked up his fourth consecutive win between the pipes, turning away a season-high 16 saves. Wentworth freshman Adam Dufault (Lexington, Mass.) recorded a career-best and season-high 20 stops, including seven deflections in the opening period.
Wentworth outshot MIT, 41-39, and won the battle of the ground balls, 35-31. Sophomore Cody Jacobucci (Woodstown, N.J.) and freshman Mitch Turley (Westfield, Ind.) combined for 12 wins at the face-off X, while Wentworth sophomore Ty Trebbe (Wilbraham, Mass.) won 12 of 24 face-offs.
Both teams return to action on Thursday, March 19 as MIT hosts Gordon College at 4:00 p.m., while Wentworth entertains Massachusetts Maritime Academy at 7:00 p.m.
