Box Score BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Freshman Graham Davis (Crofton, Md.) netted five goals, while sophomore Harris Stolzenberg (Weston, Fla.) added four goals and three assists for seven points to lead MIT to an 18-13 NEWMAC men's lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.
The visiting Engineers (11-3, 4-1 NEWMAC) overcame an early 2-1 deficit by scoring four of the final five markers of the first quarter, including two off Stolzenberg's stick, to take a 5-3 advantage after the opening 15 minutes of play. Sophomore Joseph Landy's (Chatham, N.J.) man-up goal 2:26 into the second stanza pulled the host Buccaneers (6-8, 1-4 NEWMAC) back to within one at 5-4, but MIT netted three straight and six of the final eight tallies of the half (including two more Stolzenberg goals) to take an 11-6 advantage at the break.
Freshman Keaghan Bartley (Richmond, Va.) scored twice in a 42 second span just 3:43 after the intermission to pull Massachusetts Maritime back to within three (11-8). The Engineers responded with a run of six unanswered goals, including four that came off of Davis's stick, to take control of the contest, as the Buccaneers got no closer than the final margin in the fourth quarter.
Junior Luke Verdi (Middletown, Md.) added a pair of goals and three assists in the win for MIT, which also received two markers and a helper from sophomore Michael Traub (Aliso Viejo, Calif.). Junior Paul Orrson (Baltimore, Md.) tallied twice as well for the Engineers as senior Chris Cook (Tully, N.Y.) posted a goal and two assists. Sophomore Cody Jacobucci (Woodstown, N.J.) collected a game-high seven groundballs, followed by four from freshman Christian Jamison (Huntington, N.Y.). Freshman David Klee (East Greenbush, N.Y.) led all players with three caused turnovers.
Bartley netted four goals in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a pair of tallies from freshman Robert Steinweg (Arnold, Md.). Senior Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.) added a marker and three assists on the day for the Buccaneers, who also received a marker and two helpers from sophomore Ryan McNeill (Burlington, Mass.) as well as a goal and an assist off the stick of sophomore Conor Greaney (Milton, Mass.). Junior Anthony Kurylak (Exeter, N.H.) added his team-leading 27th tally for the hosts, who also received goals from junior Sean Staples (Norwell, Mass.) and freshman Samuel Hastings (Londonderry, N.H.).
Junior Eric Bartell (San Diego, Calif.) picked up the win in goal for MIT with a 12-save effort, while junior James Klose (Ellicott City, Md.) made 13 stops in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime as the Engineers outshot the Buccaneers by a 43-39 margin overall (31-25 on goal) in extending their winning streak to four straight.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts Regis College in a non-league outing on Monday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while MIT entertains Wheaton College in a NEWMAC match on Wednesday evening in Cambridge, Mass. that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
