Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – An eight-goal run that spanned the second and third quarters propelled the MIT men's lacrosse team to a 10-6 victory over Wheaton College in a NEWMAC men's lacrosse game on Wednesday night. Sophomore Michael Traub (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) and freshman Graham Davis (Crofton, Md.) both produced four points for the Engineers (12-3, 5-1 NEWMAC) as Traub scored four goals while Davis registered two goals and two assists. Sophomore Will Morrison (Osterville, Mass.) led the way for the Lyons (9-6, 3-3 NEWMAC) with two goals and an assist.
Wheaton freshman Griffin Phaneuf (Manchester, N.H.) opened the scoring three minutes into the contest but junior Paul Orrson (Baltimore, Md.) recorded the equalizer three minutes later on a feed from classmate Luke Verdi (Middletown, Md.). The deadlock would hold until the Lyons rattled off three goals during a three-minute span late in the quarter that built a 4-1 lead. Morrison picked up two points as he assisted on an extra-man strike by senior Matthew Hillman (Brookine, Mass.) that started the spurt at 5:33 and after a strike by junior Kyle Rumberger (Hyannis, Mass.), Morrison found the back of the net with 2:21 on the clock.
MIT slowly chipped away at the deficit throughout the second stanza, eventually tying the score at four courtesy of a pair of points from Davis and Traub. A solo effort by Davis came 47 seconds into the frame before a defensive battle ensued. The Engineers eventually ended the stalemate with 4:19 on the clock when Traub connected on a pass from Davis. Less than a minute later, Traub added an unassisted marker to knot the game for the second time.
The Cardinal and Gray maintained their momentum in the third quarter as freshman Nick Martin (Mason, Ohio) won the opening face-off and went directly to the net. Just over four minutes later, tallies by Davis and freshman Mitch Turley (Westfield, Ind.) increased the hosts' margin to 7-4 at the 9:55 mark. The game became a back-and-forth affair over the course of the next six minutes until Traub broke through with back-to-back goals, including a man-up strike.
After generating 32 shots, including 11 on goal, Wheaton ended its 40-minute scoring drought on Morrison's man-up strike at the 7:22 mark midway through the fourth quarter. Senior Chris Cook (Tully, N.Y.) pushed MIT's lead back up to five (10-5) with 4:02 left to play as sophomore Ryan Gjerset (Austin, Texas) capped the scoring for the visitors with 1:46 remaining.
Cook finished with a goal and an assist while freshman Christian Jamison (Huntington, N.Y.) posted three groundballs and two caused turnovers. Senior John Kramer (Glastonbury, Conn.) chipped in two caused turnovers as Martin was 15-of-19 in face-offs and racked up 11 groundballs. In net, junior Eric Bartell (San Diego, Calif.) compiled 11 saves, seven groundballs, and two caused turnovers.
Both Hillman and Phaneuf notched a goal and an assist for the Lyons while sophomore Kyle Neale (Brooklyn, N.Y.) registered a team-high six groundballs. Freshman James Holston (Wynnewood, Pa.) had two caused turnovers as junior goalie Ryan Clair (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) totaled 13 saves and five groundballs.
Both squads close out the NEWMAC regular season on Saturday, April 25. MIT will visit Springfield College while Wheaton will host the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
