Box Score SALEM, Mass. – Junior Paul Orrson (Baltimore, Md.) posted four goals, one assist, and three caused turnovers while sophomore Harris Stolzenberg (Weston, Fla.) registered three goals and two assists as the MIT men's lacrosse team defeated Salem State University, 17-10, on Tuesday night. With the win, the Engineers improved to 8-3 on the season.
Freshman Graham Davis (Crofton, Md.) also racked up four goals for the Cardinal and Gray as senior Chris Cook (Tully, N.Y.) notched two goals and one assist. Senior John Kramer (Glastonbury, Conn.) and junior Jonah Hessels (Laytonsville, Md.) both produced one goal and two groundballs while sophomore Michael Traub (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) collected a team-high four groundballs, followed by three from freshman Christian Jamison (Huntington, N.Y.). Freshman Nick Martin (Mason, Ohio) won eight of his 14 faceoff attempts and added three groundballs as junior goalie Eric Bartell (San Diego, Calif.) generated 13 saves.
Salem State got on the board first but MIT rattled off three goals in a two-minute span to go ahead for good with 6:06 left in the first quarter. Stolzenberg set up Orrson for the equalizer as freshman Mitch Turley (Westfield, Ind.) redirected a feed from Cook to put the Engineers in front. A solo effort by Stolzenberg capped the spurt but the Vikings cut their deficit in half (3-2) with three minutes to go.
This was as close as it would get as MIT outscored Salem State, 13-5, over the course of the next 39 minutes. Orrson started things off by finding the back of the net after 51 seconds elapsed in the second stanza before going on to record two more goals and an assist in the period. Davis and Hessels added goals of their own as the Engineers entered the intermission with an 8-4 advantage.
The third quarter saw Cook and Stolzenberg play a role in all four of MIT's goals, helping it increase the margin to 12-6. Cook scored at the 14:13 mark while Stolzenberg buried an unassisted strike four minutes later. The Vikings ended a 10-minute scoring drought with 5:17 on the clock but Stolzenberg earned an assist on a blast by Davis while Cook's marker finished off the frame.
The Engineers used a 4-2 run to push their lead to 16-7 with 6:19 left to play. Junior Graham Francis (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) provided the first goal while two Davis strikes sandwiched an unassisted tally by Stolzenberg. Salem State generated a trio of late goals but eight seconds after the hosts' final shot Kramer found the back of the net with 17 ticks remaining.
Next up for MIT will be a visit to NEWMAC rival Clark University on Saturday, April 11.
