- The Lead: Led by a game-high 22-point effort from sophomore guard AJ Jurko (Weston, Fla.), the MIT men's basketball team won its second straight game with a 73-70 road win at Salem State University on Thursday night at Twohig Gymnasium.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Engineers jumped out to an early 21-10 lead with 10:42 left in the first half as that run was capped by a Jurko three for the visitors. MIT continued to lead 31-16 with just 3:01 remaining in the opening period after a Jurko layup before the Vikings closed to within 34-28 at the break, highlighted by a three-pointer from Alexander Santos with four seconds remaining.
- In the second, Salem State closed to within just one at 41-40 with 13:49 on the clock as Shaquan Murray's layup made it a one possession game. MIT answered with a 13-4 run, capped by a layup from sophomore Samuel Bockman (Oceanside, Calif.) before the Vikings put together a run of their own.
- Salem State took the lead at 62-61 on a layup by Murray before a pair of Jurko baskets put the Engineers back in front 67-62. MIT used two free throws by sophomore Cameron Korb (Los Gatos, Calif.) in the final moments to seal the team's third straight victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Jurko led all scorers with 22 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the field to go along with nine rebounds and six assists. Korb chipped in 16 points in 31 minutes off the bench, while senior Tim Butala (Monroe, Conn.) was again in double figures with 14 points to go along with seven rebounds.
- The Vikings had four players in double figures, including 14 points each from Marcus Faison and Jacob Lindland. Faison also finished with 10 rebounds for the double-double, while Lindland's points came in 27 minutes off the bench. Salem State also had 12-point efforts from both Murray and Santos in the three-point loss.
- MIT outshot the Vikings from the field 48.2-40.8 percent, while Salem State held an 11-4 scoring edge from the free throw line.
