- The Lead: With four players in double figures on Thursday night in non-conference play, the MIT basketball team pulled away to its sixth straight win with a 74-46 road victory over Rhode Island College at the Murray Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Over the first 10 minutes of the opening half, the Engineers jumped out to a double-digit lead as a three from sophomore AJ Jurko (Weston, Fla.) gave MIT the 18-6 edge with 9:53 on the clock.
- The Anchormen did answer over the first period though, highlighted by a Chris Farrington jumper with 6:11 left in the half that pulled the visitors within just five at 23-18. In the end, the Engineers took a 33-21 advantage into the second period following a late 10-3 scoring spurt.
- In the second half, MIT used a decisive 17-9 run to stretch the lead out to 50-30 as a Jurko layup was the basket that extended the lead to 20 to cap the eight-minute scoring run. Sophomore Dakota Pierce (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) picked up his final basket of the game on a layup with 2:06 left in the contest for the 74-46 margin as the teams were both scoreless over the remainder of the contest.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- MIT was led by 18 points each from Pierce and senior Tim Butala (Monroe, Conn.), who now has double figures in each of his last seven games overall. Pierce also added seven rebounds, while Jurko ended the game with 14 points and six assists. In addition, sophomore Tim Roberts (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) had double figures off the bench for a second straight contest with a 13 point, nine-rebound effort in a near double-double.
- For the Anchormen, Domonique Ball was the lone player in double figures as he tallied 13 points off the bench.
- MIT held a convincing 46-30 rebounding edge and totaled 20 assists overall in the game. The Engineers also shot 45.2 percent overall from the field and connected at a clip of 45.5 percent from three-point land.
