- The Lead: Led by a career-high 32 points from junior Cameron Korb (Los Gatos, Calif.), the MIT men's basketball team picked up a 76-63 home win over Rhode Island College on Thursday night at Rockwell Cage. Korb was 8-for-13 from three-point land as the Engineers ran their winning streak to five straight.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Anchormen jumped out to an early 7-3 over the first 3:22, capped by a jumper from Chris Farrington. MIT answered with a 17-6 run over the next 7:09 though to move into a 20-13 lead after a Korb layup and continued to lead 27-18 on a Korb three-pointer with 4:53 on the clock. MIT took a 32-26 lead into the halftime break as the hosts knocked down five threes in the first period and shot 41.4 percent from the field.
- In the second, an early layup from sophomore Nacho Nwana (White Plains, N.Y.) gave MIT its first double-digit lead of the game at 37-26 and the Engineers continued to lead 50-36 after a Tim Roberts (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) layup at 12:29.
- RIC answered and with 9:18 remaining, the Anchormen rallied to within 53-47 on a jumper by Grant Gillis. MIT countered with a quick 7-2 scoring spurt however, capped by a Korb three-pointer that made it a 60-49 margin midway through the half. MIT led by at least seven the rest of the way and by as many as 15 twice, including first at 69-54 with 2:25 remaining after a jumper from Korb.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- While playing all 40 minutes, Korb was 10-for-16 from the field, 4-for-5 from the free throw line and committed zero turnovers. Junior Bradley Jomard (Paris, France) posted 15 points with seven rebounds and five assists, while Roberts nearly registered a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.
- Roosevelt Shider was the top scorer for RIC with 13 points to go along with 10 points each from Farrington and Mike Valelli.
- MIT outrebounded the Anchormen by a narrow 34-33 margin, while each team turned the ball over just nine times.
- The Engineers shot 49.1 percent from the field, including 57.7 percent in the second half while hitting 9-of-11 free throws in the period. MIT finished with 16 assists on 27 field goals, while Gillis led RIC with three blocks.
- MIT is receiving 38 votes in the latest D3hoops.com National Top 25 Poll, ranked just outside of the Top 25.
