Women's Volleyball Drops Tough Four-Set Match at Wellesley

Box Score

THE BASICS:

- Score: Wellesley College 3, MIT 1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23)

- Records: MIT (20-6, 6-2 NEWMAC), Wellesley (20-3, 9-0 NEWMAC)

- Location: Wellesley, Mass. (Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse)

- The Lead: In a tightly played NEWMAC women's volleyball match that featured 28 ties and 13 lead changes, Wellesley College emerged with a 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23 victory over MIT on Tuesday night. Junior Emily Condon (Orange, Calif.) powered the Engineers' attack with 10 kills while registering a .529 hitting performance.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Set 1: Wellesley scored four out of the first five points before eventually building a 20-12 advantage. A kill by Condon sparked an 11-4 run as an ace by first-year Emma Suh (Santa Monica, Calif.) kept MIT alive at 24-23. The comeback attempt would be denied courtesy of a kill by the Blue.

- Set 2: The second set was a back-and-forth affair as there were 11 ties and seven lead changes. Trailing 21-19, Wellesley capitalized on a kill and three hitting errors to take a small lead. The Engineers used back-to-back kills from first-year Alyssa Unell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and a setting error to reach set point before clinching the 25-23 win on another Unell kill.

- Set 3: MIT recorded the first four points of the set before establishing a 14-9 advantage. The Blue replied with an 11-3 run, which put it ahead for good. The Engineers went on a 4-1 spurt, tying the frame at 21. Wellesley converted a hitting error and two kills to reach set point, however, a hitting error and a block by Condon and junior Andie Maloney (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) extended the frame. The late rally was then thwarted due to a serving error.

- Set 4: After a closely played start to the set which saw MIT hold a 14-13 edge, the Blue mounted an 11-3 run, reaching match point on a block. A kill by Unell kicked off a string of six unanswered points that was capped by an ace from Julia Caravias (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and made the score 24-23. Wellesley countered with a kill to secure the victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Caravias posted 10 kills, followed by nine from seniors Alexis Groark (Elwood, N.Y.) and Shea Landeene (Phoenix, Ariz.).

- Maloney dished out 43 assists while senior Madison Lee (Hillsborough, Calif.) amassed a match-high 19 digs.
