Football Picks Up 22-16 Road Victory at Coast Guard

Box Score

THE BASICS:

- Score: MIT 22, U.S. Coast Guard Academy 16

- Records: MIT (4-2, 3-1 NEWMAC); U.S. Coast Guard Academy (5-3, 3-2 NEWMAC)

- Location: New London, Conn. (Cadet Memorial Field)

- The Lead: Sophomore Ashton Robinson (Louisville, Ky.) scored the go-ahead touchdown with 54 seconds left in the fourth to lift the MIT football team to a 22-16 road win over the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Saturday afternoon. The Bears had tied the game with 2:43 remaining before the Engineers came away with the eventual six-point win.

THE WAY IT HAPPENED:

- MIT got on the board first as junior Mark Wright (Fort Worth, Texas) converted a 28-yard field goal with 5:17 left in the first quarter, capping a 14-play, 65-yard drive. The Engineers added to the lead in the opening moments of the second period as junior Keithen Shepard (Vancouver, Wash.) pulled in a 31-yard touchdown pass from senior Chris Mauck (Wellington, Fla.) for the 9-0 halftime lead after the extra point was unsuccessful.

- The Bears got on the board with 5:32 left in the third quarter with Patrick Crowley knocking a 24-yard field goal through the uprights for the 9-3 score. With 11 seconds left in the third, Mauck ran it in from one yard out for MIT as the Engineers took a double-digit lead for the first time at 16-3.

- Coast Guard rallied with a two-yard touchdown by Chris Gardner early in the fourth, but the extra point try was blocked. The Bears did tie the game though with 2:43 on the clock as Ryan Jones scored on fourth and goal from the one to make it a 16-16 game. Jones made that drive possible as he busted out a 62-yard run on second down to move Coast Guard into the red zone at the MIT 20-yard line.

- After a punt by MIT's Jack Oswald (Calabasas, Calif.), the Bears fumbled the return and MIT took over at the Coast Guard 17-yard line after senior Jake Benoit (De Pere, Wis.) recovered the fumble. That field position set the Engineers up for the game-winning score as Robinson went in untouched off the left side for the win.
