THE BASICS:

- Score: MIT 3, Wellesley College 2 (21-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 16-14)

- Records: MIT (24-6, 8-2 NEWMAC), WPI (14-13, 4-6 NEWMAC)

- Location: Worcester, Mass. (Harrington Auditorium)

- The Lead: In a tightly played NEWMAC women's volleyball match that featured 41 ties and 19 lead changes, MIT came from behind to record a 21-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 16-14 victory at WPI in the NEWMAC regular-season finale on Saturday. MIT saw five players reach double-digits in kills while another five players reached double-digits in digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Set 1: MIT held a 16-13 edge after a serving error, but WPI responded with a 9-1 run. MIT won three out of the next four points to come within 23-20, however, an exchange of points closed out the set as WPI captured a 25-21 win.

- Set 2: The second set was a back-and-forth affair as there were nine ties and four lead changes. Tied at 21, kills by sophomore Julia Caravias (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and first-year Alyssa Unell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) gave MIT some breathing room. WPI responded with a kill, which was matched by Caravias. A blocking error kept WPI alive but a kill from senior Alexis Groark (Elwood, N.Y.) clinched the 25-23 win.

- Set 3: The third set featured 11 ties and five lead changes. Trailing 18-16, a setting error sparked a 9-2 WPI run that gave it the come-from-behind win.

- Set 4: The fourth set was another tight frame as there were nine ties and two lead changes. Trailing 13-12, a kill by junior Andie Maloney (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) kicked off an 8-3 burst which put MIT ahead for good. WPI battled back, closing the gap to one on two occasions, the last at 24-23. MIT used a Unell kill to thwart the late rally and secure the win.

- Set 5: The final frame was closely played as there were seven ties and five lead changes. WPI established an 8-5 advantage at the changeover but MIT captured the next three points. WPI then inched out to an 11-9 lead, however, MIT put together a 5-2 spurt and reached matched point on a hitting error. A kill by WPI extended the match, however a Groark kill followed by a hitting error helped MIT claim the 16-14 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Groark led all players with 16 kills and added four blocks while Unell finished with 12 kills and three blocks.

- Junior Emily Condon (Orange, Calif.) and Caravias both had 10 kills as Condon chipped in four blocks. Senior Shea Landeene (Phoenix, Ariz.) rounded out MIT's attack with 11 kills.

- Maloney tallied 53 assists, 11 digs, and four blocks while senior Madison Lee (Hillsborough, Calif.) collected a match-high 19 digs.

- Junior Francesca Macchiavello (Lexington, Ky.) and sophomore Maggie Wang (Rockville, Md.) both registered 12 digs as Macchiavello earned four aces. First-year Sofie Kupiec (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) bolstered MIT's defense with 10 digs.
