Raman Leads Men's Cross Country to Ninth Place at Division III National Championship

THE BASICS:

- Location: E.P. Tom Sawyer Park (Louisville, Ky.)

- Team Finish: 9th Place - 299 Points

- The Lead: Led by an All-American performance by first-year Sanjay Raman (Seattle, Wash.), the MIT men's cross country team finished ninth overall at the 2019 NCAA Division III National Championship this afternoon in Louisville.

MIT registered its fifth top-10 finish in program history and first top-10 placement since 2016 at today's Division III national championship. Previously, the Engineers registered top-10 finishes in 2016 (seventh), 2014 (eighth), 1994 (tenth) and 1985 (eighth).

A LOOK INSIDE THE RESULTS:

- Raman, who was this year's New England and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Rookie of the Year, paced the Engineers as he finished 30th overall in a time of 24:52.7 to claim his first career All-America honor at his first national championship meet. Raman became MIT's first cross country All-American since Dennis Maloney in 2017 and this year marks the third time in the last four seasons that the Engineers have had at least one All-American.

- Sophomore Andrew Mah (Newton, Mass.) finished 60th overall with a time of 25:11.2, while first-year Matthew Kearney (Austin, Texas) claimed 83rd place with a time of 25:21.6. Senior captain Josh Derrick (Winnetka, Ill.) crossed the finish line in 87th place with a time of 25:23.2 and classmate Steven Goldy (Centennial, Colo.) rounded out the top-5 finishers for MIT as he crossed the line 110th overall with a time of 25:32.1.

- Two other Engineers competed in today's Division III national championship as junior Finn Jacobson-Schulte (Lakeville, Minn.) finished 208th in 26:09.7 and first-year Vedang Lad (Plainsboro, N.J.) came in 225th in 26:17.0.
