THE BASICS:

- The Lead: In non-conference action on Monday night, the MIT men's basketball team dropped an 80-60 final to visiting Rhode Island College. The game was tied 23-23 at halftime before the Anchormen gained control behind 56.8 percent shooting from the field in the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- MIT took an early 3-2 lead before the Anchormen jumped out to a six-point lead at 11-5 following a three-point play by Benjamin Vezele. The teams went over seven minutes without a field goal over the final eight minutes of the period as MIT tied the game at 21-21 with 2:32 left on a free throw from senior captain Christien Williams (Charlotte, N.C.).

- After a jumper by Deyshawn Tengbeh gave the Anchormen the 23-21 edge, junior Ian Hinkley (Raleigh, N.C.) hit a pair of free throws with 13 seconds left to send the game into the break at 23-23.

- The teams traded the lead back and forth five times in the first 4:02 of the second half before RIC heated up. A jumper by Keyshaun Jacobs gave the visitors a double-digit lead at 44-33 with 12:57 on the clock and later pushed out to a 21-point lead at 60-39. The Anchormen led by as many as 27 points after eight straight points by Jacobs with 6:20 left, en route to the 20-point final. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Hinkley finished the game with 17 points and seven rebounds, along with 12-point, 10-rebound double-doubles by first-year Kael Kordonowy (Wichita, Kan.) and sophomore Dan Pilsbury (Millington, N.J.). 

- For the Anchormen, Tim Deng finished with 28 points and eight rebounds, while Jacobs had 22 points behind six three-pointers. Shion Darby nearly finished with a double-double, posting eight points and a game-high eight assists.

- Rhode Island College forced 18 MIT turnovers and had nine steals while shooting 61.5 percent from three-point land in the second half (8-for-13) after going 0-for-18 in the first half.
