- The Lead: Playing in the Gordon College Invitational for the first time since 2010, the MIT women's volleyball team opened up its season by sweeping SUNY Potsdam, 25-10, 25-18, 25-20, on Friday night. Senior Alexis Groark (Elwood, N.Y.) powered the Engineers with a match-high 11 kills to go along with a .556 hitting performance.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Set 1: MIT won the first two points and never looked back as it built a 24-6 advantage. Potsdam claimed the next four points but ended the set with a service error.
- Set 2: The Engineers jumped out to a 5-1 lead and maintained a small margin before going up 24-16 courtesy of a block by sophomore Julia Caravias (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and junior Emily Condon (Orange, Calif.). The Bears picked up the next two points before a kill by Groark secured the win.
- Set 3: Trailing 6-3, a kill by first-year Alyssa Unell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) sparked a 19-7 run which gave MIT a comfortable 22-13 cushion. Potsdam chipped away at the deficit, coming within three on two occasions, the last at 23-20. The Engineers responded with kills from Caravias and first-year Lilly Edwards (Kansas City, Mo.) to clinch the match.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Edwards finished with six kills while senior Madison Lee (Hillsborough, Calif.) tallied nine digs and three aces.

- This was just the second meeting between both programs and the first since 2009, which was a victory for the Engineers.
