- The Lead: Led by a 30-point, nine-rebound, eight-assist performance from first-year Kael Kordonowy (Wichita, Kan.), the MIT men's basketball team picked up a hard-fought 82-73 road win on Saturday afternoon at Emerson Gymnasium.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- MIT got off to a quick 9-0 start as two free throws by junior Ian Hinkley (Raleigh, N.C.) capped off the run over the first 2:50 of action. Kordonowy gave MIT its first double-digit lead of the day at 21-10 with 11:50 on the clock before the Lyons mounted a comeback and pulled with 30-29 at the 3:41 mark. MIT eventually made it a 38-32 margin at the halftime break as the Engineers shot 50 percent from the field overall and Kordonowy hit a late jumper.
- In a tight game, Wheaton pulled to within four at 64-60 following a layup from Aaron Williams and later closed to 64-62 with six minutes remaining after two free throws by Alex Dubrow. MIT's Hinkley hit a three with 5:35 on the clock to make it a 67-62 margin and the Engineers held off the Lyons for the first of two meetings between before the two teams.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Kordonowy finished with 30 points, nine rebounds and eight assists while Hinkley tallied 27 points and five three-pointers and sophomore Giannis Chatziveroglou (Athens, Greece) picked up a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double.
- For the Lyons, they had five overall players and four off the bench in double figures as Alex Carlisle paced the team with 16. Williams tallied 13, along with 12 from Marckenley Lima and 10 each by Robby Lowey and Evan Cook.
- The Engineers outrebounded the Lyons by a 41-34 margin and forced 13 turnovers.
