The Lead: A 25-11, 24-26, 25-18, 25-7 victory over Framingham State University on Friday night helped the nationally-ranked No. 18 MIT women's volleyball team improve to 15-0 on the year. The Engineers' 15-0 record ties for the fourth-best start to a season in program history as the Cardinal and Gray also kicked off the 2017 campaign with 15 straight wins.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-
Set 1: Trailing 5-2, a hitting error ignited a 15-2 run as MIT went on to win the opening set, 25-11.
-
Set 2: Framingham State jumped out to an 11-4 lead, but the Engineers battled back and tied the score at 16 courtesy of a kill by senior
Julia Caravias (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.). The Rams replied with a 4-1 burst to create some breathing room. Another kill by Caravias kicked off an exchange of points which gave the hosts set point at 24-21. MIT capitalized on a Caravias kill, a Framingham State hitting error, and a block by graduate student
Emily Condon (Orange, Calif.) to stay alive. However, the Rams thwarted the comeback attempt by generating a kill and an ace.
-
Set 3: Framingham State inched out to an 11-8 lead. Sparked by a serving error, the Engineers rattled off eight unanswered points as they went on to secure a 25-18 victory.
-
Set 4: Tied at two, a kill by junior
Alyssa Unell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) set off a 15-0 run as MIT cruised to a 25-7 win.
