- The Lead: In the NEWMAC opener for both teams, MIT dropped a hard-fought road game to Catholic University as the Cardinals defeated the Engineers by a 23-13 final on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- On the opening drive of the game, MIT junior
Adam Zimmermann (Houston, Texas) intercepted Catholic QB
Madden Lowe at the 41-yard line and the Engineers later turned that into a touchdown as sophomore
Brady Klein (Washington, Ill.) found the end zone on an eight-yard rushing TD with 10:40 left in the quarter.

- Midway through the second quarter,
Fabrizio Reilly got the Cardinals on the board with a 26-yard field goal to make it a 7-3 game. Catholic went in front for good just 23 seconds before halftime as
Mark Cheffers pulled in an 11-yard touchdown pass from Lowe to cap a 14-play, 86-yard drive for the 10-7 advantage at the break.

- After a scoreless third quarter, the Cardinals added to their lead in the fourth as
Mason Stillwell intercepted MIT quarterback
Chris Mauck (Wellington, Fla.) and returned the ball to the MIT 21-yard line. Four plays later, Lowe found
Preston Jeffrey with a five-yard scoring pass to make it a two-score lead at 17-7 with 5:01 remaining.

- Mauck led the Engineers on a 13-play, 92-yard drive for a touchdown as he found a diving
Ben Dwyer (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) just inside the right pylon for the score as MIT kept the game alive at 17-13 with 2:38 on the clock. An ensuing onside kick attempt was recovered by
Liam Dearing and returned 42 yards for the touchdown though to seal the win by a 23-13 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- MIT outgained the Cardinals by a 118-61 margin on the ground and by a 319-270 number in total offense. Senior
George Stultz (Frederick, Md.) was the top rusher for MIT with 48 yards on 11 attempts, while Mauck threw for 201 yards on 20 completions and one touchdown. Dwyer paced MIT with seven receptions for 65 yards and one touchdown.

Evan Gwozdz (Middleboro, Mass.) had 73 kickoff return yards in five chances and senior
Paul Calvetti (Ridgewood, N.J.) was the leading tackler for MIT with 12 tackles and a forced fumble.

- For Catholic, Lowe completed 29-of-43 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns as Cheffers pulled in 10 of those passes for a game-high 89 yards.
