Men's Soccer Upsets No. 10 Coast Guard, 1-0

MIT blanks the previously unbeaten Bears

THE BASICS:
- Score: MIT – 1, No. 10 Coast Guard - 0
- Records: MIT (8-2-1, 2-0-1 NEWMAC); Coast Guard (8-1-1, 2-1-0 NEWMAC)
- Location: New London, Conn. (Nitchman Field)
- The Lead: The MIT men's soccer team went on the road and upset No. 10 Coast Guard, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon thanks to an early first-half goal by John Flynn and outstanding defense, as the Engineers notched their sixth shutout of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Engineers took an early 1-0 lead on the tenth-ranked team in the country as senior Noah Faro (Rexford, N.Y.) lifted a ball in from the far side to the front of the cage where junior Alex Weiler (Portland, Ore.) then headed the ball over to classmate John Flynn (Ashburn, Va.) who was racing to the front of the net and put the ball into the goal at 12:38.

- MIT looked to extend its lead late in the first half, but Bears netminder Josh Hudson made two saves to keep it a one-score game.

- Coast Guard dialed up the offensive pressure in the second half, however, Paarth Desai (Lawrenceville, Ga.) turned each scoring chance away.

- The Bears' best opportunity to tie the match came on a penalty kick at 73:13 but Desai made the save as the Engineers secured the upset victory and handed the Bears their first loss of the season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Desai made seven saves in the game, all coming in the second half, as he improves to 4-2 on the year. Hudson made five saves in goal for the Bears and falls to 3-1-0 on the season.

- The Bears held a slight edge in shots at 15-14 and in corner kicks as they earned four while MIT had three in the contest.
