The Lead: In a battle for the top spot in the NEWMAC women's volleyball standings, Babson College emerged with a 19-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-20 victory over No. 19 MIT on Tuesday night.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
-
Set 1: MIT inched out to a 6-2 lead and later put together a 7-1 run which resulted in an 18-11 advantage. The Engineers maintained their cushion, reaching set point at 24-17 on a kill by first-year
Ella Gragg (Morganton, N.C.). A Babson kill and block extended the frame, however, a kill from senior
Annie Bryan (Kirkwood, Mo.) clinched the set.
Â
-
Set 2: The first half of the set was closely played as there were eight ties and two lead changes. A serving error by the Beavers tied the score at 15, but an MIT hitting error ignited a 10-2 set-ending run for the hosts.
Â
-
Set 3: Babson jumped out to a 7-3 lead and held a slim margin for most of the set, eventually going up 21-15. Four errors by the Beavers in addition to a block from junior
Lilly Edwards (Kansas City, Mo.) brought the Engineers within one. A hitting miscue by MIT coupled with a kill gave Babson a 23-20 edge, but the Engineers capitalized on two errors by the Beavers and an ace from junior
Sofie Kupiec (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) to even the score. An exchange of points followed until Babson registered a kill and a block to capture the 26-24 victory.
Â
-
Set 4: After a back-and-forth start, the Beavers recorded four consecutive points to establish a 13-6 advantage. A kill by junior
Alyssa Unell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) kicked off an exchange of points that moved the score to 15-9. Babson went on a 6-2 spurt; however, MIT mounted a 9-2 run which brought it within 23-20. The late rally was thwarted due to a kill and block by the Beavers.
Â
