The Lead: In a battle of nationally-ranked teams, No. 3 Trinity University topped No. 18 MIT, 25-12, 25-16, 25-22, in non-conference women's volleyball action on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-
Set 1: Trinity captured the opening point and maintained a small cushion until a kill by
Annie Rose Leggett sparked a 9-2 run which resulted in a 19-8 advantage. The Tigers went on to win the set, 25-12, courtesy of a kill by
Sarah Williammee.
-
Set 2: Trinity gradually built an 11-6 lead following a kill by Williammee. MIT used kills by junior
Alyssa Unell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and senior
Annie Bryan (Kirkwood, Mo.) to close the gap, however, the Tigers put together a 7-1 run. A serving error followed by an ace from first-year
Ella Gragg (Morganton, N.C.), a block by sophomore
Allison Brattley (Fleetwood, Pa.), and a Trinity hitting error trimmed the Engineers' deficit to 18-13. This was as close as it would get as a kill from
Maddie Fate kicked off a 7-3 set-ending run by the Tigers.
-
Set 3: The set was closely played as there were nine ties and three lead changes. Trailing 6-3, a serving error sparked a 6-1 MIT burst which was capped by an ace from senior
Emma Suh (Santa Monica, Calif.). Back-to-back Leggett kills evened the score at nine. After trading points, the Engineers inched out to a 15-12 lead on a kill by sophomore
Consecrata Rozario (Cary, N.C.). Trinity stayed within striking distance until it mounted an 8-1 run, giving the Tigers match point at 24-20. Kills by Gragg and Bryan kept MIT alive, however, a kill by
Sara Flynn secured the come-from-behind victory.
