The Lead: A historic season came to the end for the eighth-ranked MIT women's soccer team in the Elite Eight as the Engineers fell to 14
th-ranked Wesleyan University in overtime by a score of 2-1. The Cardinals scored 35 seconds into the overtime period to punch their ticket to Greensboro, N.C. for the Final Four.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Cardinals wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as the NESCAC Player of the Year,
Grace Devanny raced down the far sideline and lifted a shot just over MIT goaltender
Ava Gillikin's (Flemington, N.J.) outstretched hands for her 10
th goal of the season at the 2:17 mark in the opening half.
- MIT turned up the offensive tempo after that goal looking for the equalizer. Shots by senior
Karenna Groff (Weston, Mass.) were both turned away by Cardinals' netminder
Sarah Hammond, but the Engineers finally broke through at the 16:25 mark when sophomore
Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) streaked down the far side of the field and lifted the ball just under the crossbar to tie the match.
- Looking to take their first lead of the day, MIT put three quick shots on cage within the first six minutes of the second half, but Hammond was able to turn them all away.
- Excellent play by the Engineers' defense allowed the offense to continue to look for the second goal of the match. First-Year
Ashley English (Sheboygan, Wisc.) was inches away from giving MIT the lead but her shot from outside the box just hit the crossbar and went out of play and for the second day in a row, MIT would need extra time to decide a winner.
- Just like she did in the first half, Devanny utilized her speed to get past the MIT defense and posed up for an arching shot that tucked right under the crossbar just over Gillikin's fingertips to give the Cardinals the 2-1 victory and a trip to the Final Four in Greensboro, N.C.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- This was a historic season for the Engineers as the team reached the Elite 8 for the first time in team history and set many new program records including wins (22) and winning percentage (.900).
- With her goal, Rowlett caps an impressive season, leading the team with 16 goals and 37 points.
