No. 8 Bowdoin Rallies to Defeat MIT, 54-50

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 8 Bowdoin College 54, MIT 50

- Records: MIT (3-2); Bowdoin (7-0)

- Location: Brunswick, Maine (Morrell Gymnasium)

- The Lead: Nationally-ranked No. 8 Bowdoin College mounted a 22-8 run during the fourth quarter to come from behind and defeat MIT, 54-50, in a non-conference women's basketball game on Sunday afternoon. First-year Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) led all players with 16 points while producing six rebounds, one block, and one steal for the Engineers.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- MIT opened the game with 10 unanswered points before going up 12-2 on Nwogu's layup midway through the quarter. Bowdoin replied with a 14-0 run, taking a 16-12 lead less than a minute into the second quarter. First-year Elise Harvey (Wayland, Mass.) ended the Engineers' scoring drought with a three-pointer on MIT's ensuing possession.

- A defensive battle followed as the score remained unchanged until a layup by the Polar Bears at the 4:51 mark. The Engineers countered with a layup by Nwogu, sparking an 8-2 run as a three-pointer from first-year Sarah Berman (York, Pa.) gave MIT a 23-20 lead with 1:45 on the clock. Bowdoin capped the scoring with a jumper right before the halftime buzzer sounded.

- The early stages of the third quarter were a back-and-forth affair as there were three lead changes. Two free throws by Nwogu set off a 9-0 spurt as the Engineers built a 34-27 advantage at the 4:14 mark. MIT maintained the small cushion, ending the frame with a 36-32 edge.

- The Engineers reestablished their 10-point margin during the opening minute of the fourth quarter courtesy of two layups by senior Kylie Gallagher (Upton, Mass.) and one from classmate Paula Pieper (Greensville, S.C.). The Polar Bears gradually mounted their game-winning run as a layup put them in front, 50-48, with 1:39 left to play. MIT tied the game a minute later with a layup by Pieper. Down the stretch, Bowdoin used a 4-of-6 performance at the charity stripe to secure the win while a trio of three-point attempts by the visitors were just off the mark.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Gallagher recorded her third consecutive double-double as she tallied 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with two steals and a block. First-year Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) led all players with eight assists and four steals while scoring seven points. Pieper rounded out the Engineers with eight rebounds and five assists.

- MIT ended the day with advantages in rebounds (43-38) and second-chance points (9-7), but Bowdoin had the upper hand in points off turnovers (22-6), bench scoring (18-8), and points in the paint (30-28).

- The Engineers shot 33.3 percent (18-of-54) from the floor, 20.0 percent (4-of-20) from three-point range, and 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the free throw line.

- The Polar Bears shot 34.4 percent (21-of-61) from the floor, 28.6 percent (2-of-7) from behind the arc, and 62.5 percent (10-of-16) at the charity stripe.
