Men's Soccer Advances to NEWMAC Title Game With Thrilling Victory Over Coast Guard in PKs

MIT advances to its first title game since 2015

THE BASICS:
- Score: No. 13 MIT – 0, Coast Guard -  0 (MIT wins 4-3 in PKs )

- Records: MIT (13-3-2, 5-1-1 NEWMAC); Coast Guard (12-4-2, 4-3-0 NEWMAC)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Steinbrenner Stadium)

- The Lead: In its first semifinal appearance since 2015, the No. 13 nationally-ranked and top-seed in the NEWMAC MIT men's soccer team needed extra time, but the Engineers took down No. 4 Coast Guard in a penalty shootout to advance to Saturday's NEWMAC Tournament Final.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Bears looked to grab an early 1-0 lead as Michael Daunt was granted a penalty kick at 3:06, however, his shot sailed high and the game remained scoreless.

- After a relatively quiet first half, the teams picked up the pace in the second. MIT looked to take a 1-0 lead as sophomore Garrett Robinson (Winfield, Ill.) had his shot blocked and sophomore Aidan Hallinan (Carlsbad, Calif.) corralled the rebound and put a shot on net that was saved by Josh Hudson.

- The Bears had another excellent opportunity as Charles Fish put a shot on net, which was turned away by junior Paarth Desai (Lawrenceville, Ga.).

- Neither offense was able to break through and score after 90 minutes of action, and 20 more minutes of play still would not settle the scoreless tie as the two teams headed into a penalty kick shootout to decide a winner.

- Graduate student Loukas Carayannopoulos (Westfield, N.J.) scored first but the Bears followed with a goal of their own to make it 1-1. The teams then traded goals before junior Adam Snowdon (Lorton, Va.) stepped up and rocketed a shot into the back of the cage to give MIT a 4-3 win in PKs and send the Engineers into the championship game on Saturday.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- This was the first semifinal appearance for the Engineers since 2015 when they also earned the top spot in the league.
