Football Falls in 17-7 Home Final to Springfield College

THE BASICS:

- Score: Springfield College 17, MIT 7

- Records: MIT (4-4, 2-3 NEWMAC); Springfield College (6-3, 5-0 NEWMAC)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Steinbrenner Stadium)

- The Lead: On a chilly Saturday night, the MIT football team dropped a 17-7 final to first-place Springfield College in NEWMAC action. The Engineers had defeated the Pride in back-to-back meetings prior to tonight's victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- After a scoreless first quarter, the Pride got on the board with 8:21 left in the second as David Wells plowed up the middle from four yards out to cap a 10-play, 41-yard drive. The extra point attempt by Christian Hutra was blocked for the 6-0 edge.

- MIT answered on the ensuing possession though as a pass from graduate student Chris Mauck (Wellington, Fla.) to senior Ben Dwyer (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) drove the Engineers deep into Springfield territory at the 10-yard line. Mauck capped the drive on the next play as he lobbed a scoring strike to senior Dennis Gastel (Lincoln, R.I.) in the corner of the end zone for the 7-6 advantage that held as the halftime margin.

- On the first drive of the third quarter, a Wells 38-yard rush got the Pride moving for a drive that was eventually capped by a 19-yard scoring run up the far sideline by Wells to put Springfield up 12-7. The visitors went for two and converted as Isaiah Cashwell-Doe scrambled to the right and snuck just inside the pylon to make it a seven-point margin.

- With 3:05 remaining in the third, MIT senior Greyson D'Aloisio (Frisco, Texas) recovered a Springfield fumble for the first turnover of the game. The Pride defense stood strong though as the Engineers were turned over on downs.

- The score stayed at 14-7 until 4:55 remained in the fourth and Hutra converted a 33-yard field goal to push the lead to double digits. On the previous play, senior Ty Allen (Nashville, Tenn.) nearly picked off a Wells pass but the ball went just through his hands.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- For MIT, Mauck finished with nine completions for 164 yards and a touchdown, while Gastel had a team-high four catches and Dwyer a team-high 85 yards on three receptions. For Springfield, the leader was Wells as he tallied 142 yards and two touchdowns on the ground in the win while also adding 19 passing yards.

- Defensively, senior Paul Calvetti (Ridgewood, N.J.) posted a career-high 11 total tackles, which was just two shy of the MIT single-game record set by Cameron Wagar in 2014. Seniors Sam Gozelski (East Northport, N.Y.) and Allen each added two tackles for loss, with Gozelski's going for a pair of sacks along with seven total tackles. Billy Carr for Springfield led the Pride with six tackles that included one sack for nine yards and two tackles for loss for 12 yards.

- Overall, Springfield held a 402-181 advantage in total offensive yards, including piling up 383 yards on the ground. Due to the 75 rushing attempts, the Pride owned a 39:21-20:39 advantage in time of possession.
