THE BASICS:

- Records: MIT (25-3); Coast Guard (17-8)

- The Lead: Nationally-ranked No. 22 and No. 2 seed MIT defeated No. 3 seed U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 25-23, 25-14, 25-19, in the semifinals of the NEWMAC Women's Volleyball Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers will face No. 5 seed Springfield College in the title game on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 1:00 p.m. at Babson College. This will be MIT's 15th championship appearance and first since it won the tournament in 2017.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Set 1: Trailing 11-9, a kill by first-year Ella Gragg (Morganton, N.C.) sparked an 8-2 run which put MIT ahead for good. Coast Guard stayed close, coming within one point on five occasions, the last at 24-23 on a kill. The Engineers thwarted the comeback attempt with a kill by junior Lilly Edwards (Kansas City, Mo.).

- Set 2: MIT gradually built a 15-10 advantage courtesy of a block by Edwards and senior Annie Bryan (Kirkwood, Mo.). The Bears recorded back-to-back kills, but they would not get any closer as the Engineers put together a 10-2 set-ending run.

- Set 3: Coast Guard jumped out to a 10-4 advantage but MIT chipped away at the deficit as a three-point burst put it in front, 18-16. A pair of hitting errors tied the score, however, a kill by Bryan in addition to her strong serving resulted in match point at 24-18. A kill kept the Bears but Gragg replied with a kill of her own to clinch the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Sophomore Allison Brattley (Fleetwood, Pa.) and Gragg both paced MIT's balanced attack with nine kills.

- Bryan and Edwards both posted three blocks while Bryan notched a match-high four aces, including three during her pivotal serving run in the second set.

- Sophomore Emily Cheng (Sunnyvale, Calif.) generated 30 assists and 10 digs.

- Junior Emma Suh (Santa Monica, Calif.) tallied a team-high 12 digs while first-year Ottavia Personeni (Bethesda, Md.) totaled 10 digs.

UP NEXT:

- This will be the second time MIT and Springfield will meet in the NEWMAC Championship. The last match up occurred in 2003, which the Pride won.
