HOW IT HAPPENED:
-
Set 1: Trailing 11-9, a kill by first-year
Ella Gragg (Morganton, N.C.) sparked an 8-2 run which put MIT ahead for good. Coast Guard stayed close, coming within one point on five occasions, the last at 24-23 on a kill. The Engineers thwarted the comeback attempt with a kill by junior
Lilly Edwards (Kansas City, Mo.).
-
Set 2: MIT gradually built a 15-10 advantage courtesy of a block by Edwards and senior
Annie Bryan (Kirkwood, Mo.). The Bears recorded back-to-back kills, but they would not get any closer as the Engineers put together a 10-2 set-ending run.
-
Set 3: Coast Guard jumped out to a 10-4 advantage but MIT chipped away at the deficit as a three-point burst put it in front, 18-16. A pair of hitting errors tied the score, however, a kill by Bryan in addition to her strong serving resulted in match point at 24-18. A kill kept the Bears but Gragg replied with a kill of her own to clinch the win.
