No. 7 Engineers Play to 2-2 Double OT Tie at Brandeis

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 7 MIT 2, Brandeis University 2 (2OT)

- Records: MIT (0-0-1, 0-0-0 NEWMAC); Brandeis (0-0-1, 0-0-0 UAA)

- Location: Waltham, Mass. (Gordon Field)

- The Lead: In the season opener for both teams, the No. 7 ranked MIT women's soccer team rallied twice from a one-goal deficit to come away with a 2-2 double-overtime tie at Brandeis University in a match that was played in torrential rain throughout. The Engineers are ranked No. 7 in the United Soccer Coaches Division III National Preseason Poll.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The Judges got on the scoreboard just 3:57 into the first half on an MIT own goal, but the visitors quickly answered under two minutes later with the first goal of the season from sophomore Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.). Yasla Ngoma of Brandeis tallied an unassisted score at the 26:52 mark for the 2-1 lead for the hosts as the game went to halftime at that score.

- MIT came out of the gates quickly to start the second as senior Karenna Groff (Weston, Mass.) netted the equalizer just 2:56 into the second half.

- The two teams combined for eight shots on goal in the second period before MIT outshot the Judges by a 9-0 margin in the second overtime alone.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Brandeis owned an 11-10 edge in shots on goal, while MIT outshot the Judges 26-15 overall, including 11-1 in the two overtime periods.

- Junior Ava Gillikin (Flemington, N.J.) made eight saves for MIT in the game, while Hannah Bassan also turned aside eight shots for Brandeis.

- The Engineers generated eight corner kick chances to just two for the Judges.

- This marked the first tie in the all-time series since the 2002 season, which also came by a score of 2-2 in double overtime.

UP NEXT:

- MIT returns to action on Saturday, September 4th as the Engineers open the 2021 home schedule by hosting Bridgewater State for a 4 p.m. start.
