No. 22 MIT Battles Wellesley for Three-Set Victory

Box Score THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 22 MIT 3, Wellesley College 0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-19)

- Records: MIT (12-0, 3-0 NEWMAC), Wellesley (1-6, 0-3 NEWMAC)

- Location: Wellesley, Mass. (Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse)

- The Lead: In a back-and-forth NEWMAC women's volleyball match that featured 22 ties and 10 lead changes, nationally-ranked No. 22 MIT emerged with a 26-24, 25-22, 25-19 victory over Wellesley College on Tuesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Set 1: Trailing 11-6, a kill by sophomore Allison Brattley (Fleetwood, Pa.) sparked a 9-1 run. MIT maintained a small cushion until four straight points by Wellesley gave it a 22-21 edge. A kill from first-year Ella Gragg (Morganton, N.C.) coupled with a hitting error put the Engineers back in front. An exchange of points ensued until a kill by junior Lilly Edwards (Kansas City, Mo.) and a block by Brattley and senior Annie Bryan (Kirkwood, Mo.) gave MIT the 26-24 win.

- Set 2: Four unanswered points by the Blue resulted in a 19-16 lead. The Engineers responded with an 8-1 run that resulted in set point. A serving error and a kill extended the frame for the hosts, however, a kill from Edwards clinched the 25-22 victory.

- Set 3: Tied at seven, Wellesley recorded five of the next six points. MIT replied with a kill from Bryan, which ignited a string of seven unanswered points that fueled a 16-4 run and gave the visitors match point (24-16). Two kills and a hitting error kept the Blue alive, but an Edwards kill secured the win.

- Edwards paced MIT with 13 kills as Gragg tallied seven kills, four aces, and three blocks.

- Sophomore Emily Cheng (Sunnyvale, Calif.) dished out 22 assists while first-year Ottavia Personeni (Bethesda, Md.) led all players with 22 digs.

- Junior Alyssa Unell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) generated a match-high six blocks as classmate Sofie Kupiec (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) bolstered the defense with nine digs.
