Men's Soccer Comeback Falls Short as Engineers Fall to Wentworth, 3-2

The Engineers suffer first home loss of the season

THE BASICS:

- Score: MIT – 2, Wentworth Institute of Technology – 3

- Records: MIT (5-2-1); WIT (5-3-0)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium)

- The Lead: The MIT men's soccer team made a valiant comeback on Wednesday night at Roberts Field, however, the comeback attempt fell just short as the Engineers fell to Wentworth, 3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The Leopards took a lead at 21:39 as Eddie Smith sent a pass to John Dauphin who rifled a shot from 25-yards out past the MIT keeper to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

- Just over four minutes later, Dauphin made it 2-0 as he collected the ball off a deflection and put another shot into the back of the cage at 25:41.

- The visitors had a chance to make it 3-0 on a penalty kick, but Paarth Desai (Lawrenceville, Ga.) made a diving save to keep it a two-goal game.

- Peter Novoa (Omaha, Neb.) cut the Engineers deficit in half as he scooped up the ball and tucked the ball into the far corner of the post at 39:13.

- The Engineers had a chance to tie the game on a free-kick by Hendrik Mayer (Montville, N.J.), but WIT's keeper, Robbie West, made a diving save to keep Wentworth in the lead.

- Shortly after that at 65:59, Dauphin sent a corner kick directly into the waiting Jacob Dukeshire, who headed it in to give Wentworth a 3-1 lead.

- Once again, the Engineers cut it to a one-goal game as Nick Ciepley (Carlsbad, Calif.) sent a pass cross field to Loukas Carayannopoulos (Westfield, N.J.) who sent it into the far corner of the goal at 75:17.

- A few seconds later, MIT had some chances to tie the game at three off Garrett Robinson (Winfield, Ill.) shots, but both were blocked as the Leopards hung on for the 3-2 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-  The game was very close as both teams earned seven corner kicks while MIT had a slight advantage in shots 13-12.

- Novoa leads the team with 10 points on the year as his goal was his fourth of the season.
