The Lead: The nationally-ranked No. 22 MIT women's volleyball team improved to 13-0 on the year and 4-0 in NEWMAC play after defeating WPI, 25-19, 25-20, 24-26, 25-14, on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-
Set 1: After a tight start to the match, a pair of errors helped MIT take an 11-8 lead. The Engineers maintained a small cushion until WPI tied the score at 18. MIT replied with a kill from first-year
Ella Gragg (Morganton, N.C.), sparking a 7-1 set-ending run.
-
Set 2: The early stages of the set were closely played as there were six ties and four lead changes. Trailing 11-9, a pair of WPI errors in addition to back-to-back kills from sophomore
Allison Brattley (Fleetwood, Pa.) put MIT ahead for good. An exchange of points ensued until a 7-2 spurt gave the Engineers a 22-16 lead. WPI quickly cut its deficit in half, however, MIT recorded three of the next four points to secure the 25-20 win.
-
Set 3: Tied at five, the Engineers capitalized on a trio of WPI errors and a kill from senior
Annie Bryan (Kirkwood, Mo.) to create some breathing room. MIT maintained the small lead throughout the set as a kill by Brattley gave the visitors a 22-20 edge. WPI rattled off four straight points, but a hitting error coupled with an ace from first-year
Ottavia Personeni (Bethesda, Md.) evened the score at 24. Following its own timeout, WPI used a hitting error and a kill to complete the come-from-behind win.
-
Set 4: MIT scored the first eight points of the set and never looked back as it cruised to a 25-14 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Lilly Edwards (Kansas City, Mo.) registered 10 kills and eight digs. Brattley finished with 10 kills, followed by nine from Bryan.
