Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Pilsbury Paces Men's Basketball in 73-52 Home Victory Over Springfield

THE BASICS:

- Score: MIT 73, Springfield College 52

- Records: MIT (9-5, 2-2 NEWMAC); Springfield College (3-10, 1-3 NEWMAC)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Rockwell Cage)

- The Lead: Led by a strong team defensive effort and a game-high 21-point effort from senior Dan Pilsbury (Millington, N.J.), the MIT men's basketball team won its second straight game with a wire-to-wire 73-52 home victory over Springfield College.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The Engineers came out of the gates fast and jumped to an 11-3 lead just 4:42 in following a three-pointer from senior Ian Hinkley (Raleigh, N.C.). MIT pushed the advantage into double digits at 20-10 with 6:50 on the clock and led by at least eight over the remainder of the half. Panayiotis Kapanides hit a pair of free throws at the 4:59 mark to pull the Pride within 22-14, but MIT hung tough on defense and took a 33-20 lead into halftime.

- MIT kept up the defensive pressure over the final 20 minutes of play while shooting 45.2 percent from the field in the period. Leading by at least 13 points over the second half, the Engineers extended the lead to as many as 22 as junior Tim Kostolansky (Walnut Creek, Calif.) scored on a late dunk off a pass from sophomore Charles Rich (Holladay, Utah) that made the score 66-44 with 2:15 remaining. Rich nailed a three in the final seconds to account for the 21-point final as the Engineers finished the game with nine triples in total.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- In addition to his scoring, Pilsbury led both teams with three steals as he shot 9-for-11 from the field while playing all 40 minutes. Hinkley posted a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double, along with 13 from Rich and 11 rebounds in just 17 minutes from senior Giannis Chatziveroglou (Athens, Greece.).

- Daryl Costa and Ty Garry led the Pride scoring with 12 points each, while Nick Bray added 10 points.

- MIT forced 22 Springfield turnovers, turning those into 22 points on the other end. The Engineers also outscored the Pride 30-10 in the paint and registered assists on 19 of 26 made field goals.
