The Lead: In a game of runs, the MIT women's basketball team emerged with an 87-73 victory over NEWMAC foe U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday night. Senior
Christina Antonakakis (Holmdel, N.J.) led all players with 27 points and seven assists while classmate
Annika Sougstad (Mahtomedi, Minn.) scored a career-high 21 points to go along with nine rebounds and three assists.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Trailing 10-9, a layup by senior
Kylie Gallagher (Upton, Mass.) sparked a 14-5 run which gave MIT a lead it would not relinquish. Coast Guard drained four free throws but a jumper by Antonakakis created a 25-19 cushion at the end of the frame.
Â
- The Engineers' advantage grew to 29-19 following early baskets by Sougstad and Antonakakis. The Bears battled back, closing the gap to four on two occasions, the last at 32-28 with 5:10 on the clock. Sparked by a layup from first-year
Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.), MIT mounted a 15-4 run, entering halftime with a 47-32 lead. Sougstad accounted for seven points during the rally.
Â
- Coast Guard outscored the Engineers, 12-2, during the first 3:35 of the third quarter to come within four (49-44). A minute later, Sougstad drained a layup, setting off an 11-2 run that increased MIT's lead to 60-46 with 2:53 left. Both teams recorded five points down the stretch, moving the score to 65-51.
Â
- A jumper by Sougstad coupled with a three-pointer from first-year
Sarah Berman (York, Pa.) resulted in the Engineers' largest margin of the night at 19 points. A flurry of baskets by both sides followed as the Bears trailed, 79-64, at the 5:48 mark. After almost two minutes of scoreless play, Coast Guard ended the drought with two free throws. Sougstad replied with two free throws of her own but the Bears drained a layup on their ensuing possession. MIT countered with six straight points, reestablishing a 19-point lead with 1:55 remaining and putting the game out of reach.
