The Lead: A 14-0 run during a three-minute span late in the second quarter helped MIT pull away before going on to record a 69-37 victory over Wellesley College in a NEWMAC women's basketball game on Friday night. Senior
Kylie Gallagher (Upton, Mass.) powered the Engineers with 14 points and 14 rebounds while
Anna Greenthal paced the Blue with 11 points, three assists, and three steals.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- After a back-and-forth start, MIT inched out to a 12-6 lead following two free throws by senior
Christina Antonakakis (Holmdel, N.J.). Wellesley quickly replied with a jumper by
Caitlin Windross in the paint, setting off an exchange of baskets that moved the score to 14-10. On the Engineers' ensuing possession, first-year
Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) drained a layup, sparking an 8-2 run during the final three minutes of the first quarter.
Â
- MIT maintained its small cushion during the early stages of the second stanza but a layup by
Sairah O'Brien-Forde and a jumper from Greenthal narrowed the gap to 27-22 at the 4:53 mark. This was as close as it would get as the Engineers rattled off 14 unanswered points before entering halftime with a 41-26 advantage. Antonakakis fueled the run with seven points.
Â
- The third quarter was a defensive battle as both teams combined for 17 points, resulting in a 52-32 score at the end of the frame.
Â
- MIT continued to control the action in the fourth quarter as it outscored Wellesley, 17-5, producing a final score of 69-37.
Â
