Cambridge, Mass - (February 2) - Today the MIT Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation will celebrate the 36th annual National Girls and Women and Sports Day (NGWSD), which is sponsored by the Women's Sports Foundation (WSF). The purpose of today is to recognize student-athletes, coaches and administrators who empower those around them while building a better future for females in athletics. Each year this celebration is used to tell the stories of those in athletics while inspiring them to be active and realize their power.
This year also marks the 50th Anniversary of Title IX, which prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school or educational program and paved the way for women's athletics. Throughout the next few months, MIT will celebrate the history of Title IX and its profound impact on Engineer athletics. Be sure to check out our social media channels as we highlight the amazing accomplishments of our athletes, coaches and administrators.
To begin our celebration of both NGWSD and Title IX, we caught up with many of our student-athletes to see what role sports have had on their lives. They shared stories of friendship, perseverance, growth, and strength as well as many other reasons why sports are such an important part of their lives. Please enjoy these stories from our student athletes as well as some photos from when they were younger.
