Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Takes Down No. 16 Coast Guard, 1-0

THE BASICS:

- Score:  MIT - 1, Coast Guard - 0

- Records: MIT (6-5-0, 3-0 NEWMAC), No. 16 Coast Guard (6-1-2, 1-1-1 NEWMAC)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field)

- The Lead: In a matchup of two undefeated teams in NEWMAC play, the MIT men's soccer team took down previously undefeated and 16th-ranked Coast Guard, 1-0 on Saturday night on Roberts Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Neither team got much going on the offensive side of the ball during the first 45 minutes of play with only eight total shots between the two teams. Senior Will Seiple (Boulder, Colo.) had the best scoring chance as his shot tipped off the fingertips of Bears goaltender Max Pfleghar, off the crossbar, and out.

- The second half picked up in physicality as each team looked for the first goal. The Bears had the first opportunity to score when Aki Freeman came down the field, but junior James Simon (Ann Arbor, Mich.) made a sliding block of his shot. John Flood followed with a shot that was saved by senior Paarth Desai (Lawrenceville, Ga.).

- After a yellow card on the Bears, the Engineers took advantage as the kick from Simon was deflected in front of the net where senior John Flynn (Ashburn, Va.) ran down the side, corralled the ball, and put it into the corner for the score at 60:25.

- Coast Guard continued with the pressure in hopes of tying the match but Desai and the rest of the MIT defense stood firm and held the Bears scoreless for the first time this season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Desai made three saves in the match and improves to 4-2 on the season.

- The goal was the first of the season for Flynn.

- The Bears held a 9-8 advantage in shots and a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal. The visitors also had a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.

UP NEXT:

- The Engineers will play Brandeis on Wednesday, October 5th at 7:30 p.m. in non-conference action.
